Kentrox® Announces ATM IMA Support for Cell Site Backhaul

Improving today’s cell site while investing in the future

Hillsboro, Oregon—October 5, 2006—Kentrox®, a leading manufacturer of cell site Radio Access Networking (RAN) solutions, announces support of ATM IMA for the growth of 3G radio (UMTS) traffic and increased backhaul efficiency. CrossPATH’s new ATM IMA capability enables wireless carriers to aggregate and manage today’s existing networks while providing migration options to future packet-based technologies.

Wireless carriers are deploying 3G radios to support new bandwidth-intensive services, such as voice, web browsing, video casts, and picture sharing. UMTS radios leverage ATM IMA as the primary high-speed access technology. CrossPATH support of ATM IMA is the first in a series of product releases for packet backhaul to help manage the 3G radio traffic growth. Cell site backhaul costs are a major portion of a wireless carrier’s monthly operation expenses, and CrossPATH helps minimize these costs and improve efficiencies by fully utilizing backhaul circuits that carriers already own without having to purchase new cell site equipment.

CrossPATH is a high density one rack unit (1 RU) solution. It has up to 16 T1 ports supporting up to 8 ATM IMA groups. The T1 ports are software selectable, so carriers can choose ATM or TDM for use today and other IP software options for the future. CrossPATH offers enhanced built-in ATM IMA reports and diagnostics to identify and diagnose current or potential problems. Historical and real-time reports easily show current status and trends over time. With the remote management and monitoring capabilities, carriers can reduce T1 outages and truck rolls with early diagnosis of potential problems.

With the introduction of more bandwidth-intensive services, cell sites require higher speed backhaul. Wireless carriers could see significant savings in cost of services, efficiency of aggregating traffic, and equipment at the switching center by moving towards packet-based backhaul services. CrossPATH from Kentrox will help carriers manage today’s cell site aggregation needs of higher density leased links and improved technician efficiency while utilizing the same product for IP migration in the future.
